Today at SMX west there was a discuss about the things that are over hyped in SEO. Google’s Page rank factor was the most discussed one in that session. Google’s Director of Research, Peter Norvig said that Page Rank has just got eye catching name and is over hyped, he also said that PR probably needs a new name.

One thing that I think is still overhyped is PageRank. People think, yeah, you do this computation on the web graph and then you just order all the pages by that [PageRank]. Yes, that computation is important but it’s just one of many things. And people say, “Oh, well you’re stuck if you don’t have that.” We never felt that way. We never felt that it was such a big factor. It’s got the catchy name and the name recognition, but we’ve always looked at all the available data….

There is this confusion that there’s this one component that’s called PageRank, but the whole thing [Google's algorithm] has [also] been called that. That was a mistake. We need some better branding.

We all know that Google has already tried to de-emphasize the Page rank factor several times but Google didn’t succeed in that.

The global search engine scene has always been very competitive. This is so because advertising through search engine, pioneered by Google, has become a very huge source of revenue for companies involved in the business of search like Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo! etc. Therefore, the competing teams behind the major search engines in the market are constantly trying their best so that they can outsmart their counterparts and achieve a higher percentage of the global market share.

Google is still at the top of the pecking order with a little more than three-fourth of the market share. Yahoo! has still maintained its second place with 11.75% of the market share. But the most noticeable point is that Microsoft’s Bing has risen to the third spot with a market share of 10%.

This shows us that the hotly contested search market is going through change due to a major shakeout. With its recent self re-invention, Microsoft has found itself again a major player in the market. Bing remains the smallest of the big three, but with its lightning fast product cycle, and friendly interface, not to mention strong search results; it seems only a short time until it finds a comfortable role as the second largest.

Bing’s momentum appears to be building both in terms of traffic and public acceptance. That is in part due to clever implementations of visual search and other shortcut tricks that make it more likely a search query will return exactly the factual information one is requesting. While Google may still dominate the sector, even if Bing becomes a strong second player in the space, that could mean a huge revenue boost for Microsoft.

The growing success of Bing asks the question – why is Yahoo losing share? The company will actually shut down its search algorithms sometime next year in favor of using the algorithms designed by Microsoft that power Bing. The most obvious reason for its declining share is that Bing is eating its lunch, a situation that Yahoo probably hoped would not occur when she signed the search engine licensing and advertising revenue sharing deal with Microsoft last summer. Bing has been making strong gains in the lucrative shopping vertical, a search space where Yahoo has long been the largest player.

For Yahoo, the risk of a total collapse in search is something the company has yet to contemplate but could possibly become a reality if Bing picks up considerable steam and Yahoo ends up trapped in a contract that hems in its ability to innovate in the search space. Apart from the big three, two other prominent but less popular search engines, Cuil and Ask are determined to fight harder and carry their search engine to the top.

Everybody is familiar with Google now days and their by using Google every time they want to have, to get the things and all the stuffs that are new, latest and updated information. Google is one of a kind, all the concepts of Google are very rich, I was going through one of its concept which I like the most and was found very interesting and want to share with you all, so, Here in this post, I come up with Google Dance. Now firstly, you should know what really Google Dance is all about.

It is assumed that during the month, Google update their index by recalculating the page rank of each of the Web pages crawled by him. The update process is initiated every 30 days or so, although on some occasions there have been more than 30 days between updates. The time period during these updates is actually called the “Google Dance”. Now comes the significance of Google Dance, due to the dynamic nature of page rank, these calculations for updating index is performed about 40 times, as the index database is very large so the calculations takes several days to complete this process. During this time period the results for index might fluctuate. So to minimize these fluctuations Google Dance comes into picture.

Google has two other searchable servers apart from google.com.These are www2.google.com and www3.google.com considered as test servers for Google other than google.com (which is the main server). The reason people are interested in the dance is you can get an idea of your future Google keyword ranking by checking the other Google servers as they are updated before the main server google.com. If you have added new pages and want to know if they have been indexed, checking Google data centers during the dance will tell you.

Whilst nobody outside of “Google” truly seems to know the purpose of the www2 & www3 servers, many people have come to the assumption that they are test servers. During the update, which takes several days, the 3 Google servers display different results. Whilst the results vary from server to server, they are said to be “dancing”, hence the name “Google Dance”.

Now how can we check the new page rank during Google dance? Google has 12 datacenters all over the web, with unique IPs and any datacenter can provide the toolbar page rank for any of the webpage? During the dance these datacenters update one by one. At the beginning of the dance all datacenters return to the same, current page rank for a given web page but as the dance progresses they are updated one by one, to the new page rank value. By checking each of the data center during dance the new page rank spreads over the centers. If the page rank for a particular webpage is not changed, all the data centers will show the same values. During the dance, the results from www2 and www3 will sometimes show on the www server, but only briefly. Also, new results on www2 and www3 can disappear for short periods. At the end of the dance, the results on www will match those on www2 and www3. The reason people are interested in the dance is you can get an idea of your future Google keyword ranking by checking the other Google servers as they are updated before the main server google.com. If you have added new pages and want to know if they have been indexed, checking Google data centers during the dance will tell you.

What is spamdexing?

Spamdexing means repeating irrelevant phrases, to increase the relevancy of resources indexed by a search engine. Some consider it to be a part of search engine optimization. Putting content on a Web page that produces the results that satisfy the spamdexer but usually dissatisfy the search engine users.

“Spamdexing,” is a combination of spamming — sending user’s unsolicited information and “indexing.”

Examples of spamdexing:

1)Stuffing keywords hundreds of times in the content of the web page to make it keyword rich to increase the relevance of the page for the keyword. Keywords can be used in hidden text so that user can’t read it but search engines crawler will read it.

2)Stuffing keywords that are unrelated to the service that your website provides for the purpose of increasing visits on your website.

Example: The word SEO can be spamdexed on a page of the website providing software development services.

3)Trying to capture a competitor’s traffic by listing their name or trademarks in the meta tags (Copyright).

Putting keywords as hidden or invisible text by making font color same as the background color, using a tiny font size or hiding them within the HTML code such as no frame sections, or no script sections.

Stuffing keywords to increase its appearance on the web page in order to increase the relevancy of the page for the keyword.
Putting links where visitors will not see them in order to increase link popularity.

Creating low-quality web pages that are stuffed with very similar key words and phrases. They are designed to rank highly within the search results.

Taking the user to another page without his or her intervention.
Sending to a search engine a version of a web page different from what web surfers see.
In link spamming a spammer may create multiple web sites at different Ø If there is an Australian web site and the client is other Australian then it is better to buy a Domain name .com.au by spending few dollars.

Doorway pages and Cloaking

Doorway pages

Doorway pages are basically poor-quality page which is optimized for a specific keyword or keyword phrase. “Bridge” pages or “doorway” pages are submitted to search engines to improve their traffic. They are also known as bridge pages, jump pages, gateway pages, and entry pages. Doorway pages are designed primarily for search engines, not for human beings.

Creating doorway pages is a black hat (unethical), because Google wants to give its users the most valuable and relevant search results. But through doorway pages users don’t arrive at the goal page. Suppose user did a search for “SEO services” and the doorway page appears. They click through, but that page probably lacks detail about the SEO services they want.

Because of the gap between the search terms you entered and the goal page you receive, the names “bridge pages” and “jump pages” came from. These pages either “bridge” or “jump” visitors across the gap.

If the page you click is not the internal page of your website or not having navigation link in your website then it is a doorway page.

Cloaking

Cloaking refers to the practice of delivering one page to a search engine for indexing while serving an entirely different page to the end user. Some examples of cloaking include:

Serving a page containing text to search engines, while showing a page of images or Flash to users as search engines don’t read images and flash files.

Cloaking is often confused with doorway pages and cloaking. The pages for robot are called doorway pages and this process of creating doorway pages is called cloaking

One of the big questions with cloaking is how to tell whether the arriving visitor is a search engine spider or a human. Identification is usually done either by checking the visitors’ IP address, or his User-agent string.

There are two ways of cloaking. One is IP delivery, where the IP addresses of spiders are recognized another is User-Agent delivery, where the spiders’ User-Agents are recognized.

Search engines spiders also called crawler should not find any obstacle while traveling the website. Reliable hosting

Hosting of the site should be fast and reliable. This means that your web server should never be down when a Search Engine crawler index it, and it’s always fast enough, both for the crawler and for users because your users will like speed as much as the Robot does. If your site doesn’t respond quite often, the Robot may leave this kind of site not checked. And, it’s even possible that the website gets removed from the Search Engine database.

Generate a sitemap

Sitemap is like a map for the robots. It is an easy way for robots to index and get detailed reports about the visibility of your pages. With Search Engine Sitemap you can automatically keep the search engines informed of all your web pages.

Generally, there are two types of sitemaps.

An HTML sitemap is made both for human users and for Search Engines and helps them to easily find the information they need.

An XML Sitemap is for Search Engines only. Create and submit a Sitemap, and thus you’ll make sure that Search Engines know about all the pages on your site, including URLs that can’t be naturally discovered by Search Engines’ crawlers.

Don’t use dynamic URLs

URLs like this, www.abc.com/?product=1234, having parameters are called Dynamic URLs, while URLs like www.xyz,com/seo_services.html are called static URLs. Static URLs are very much user-friendly and also search engines like static URLs much better than dynamic ones.

Different paths to different page

If there are different path to different pages then probability of indexing all the pages increases. Example: If there are 5 paths from 5 different places to reach one city, chances are much bigger than having one path.

Fix broken links

Look at these words: flash, JavaScript, frames.

Flash, JavaScript and frames these three can make the design of your page look very nice, but for Search Engines they’re as bad as broken links.

Why no flash?

If you have some text in flash, Search Engines will not recognize it. One can make very attracting flash and can put a very good massage in it even may use link with keyword rich. But for Search Engines it will be just a set of images, no keyword-rich content or anchor texts, and absolutely no way for the Robot to know what your site’s about.

Why no JavaScript?

The
