Doorway pages are basically poor-quality page which is optimized for a specific keyword or keyword phrase. “Bridge” pages or “doorway” pages are submitted to search engines to improve their traffic. They are also known as bridge pages, jump pages, gateway pages, and entry pages. Doorway pages are designed primarily for search engines, not for human beings.

Creating doorway pages is a black hat (unethical), because Google wants to give its users the most valuable and relevant search results. But through doorway pages users don’t arrive at the goal page. Suppose user did a search for “SEO services” and the doorway page appears. They click through, but that page probably lacks detail about the SEO services they want.

Because of the gap between the search terms you entered and the goal page you receive, the names “bridge pages” and “jump pages” came from. These pages either “bridge” or “jump” visitors across the gap.

If the page you click is not the internal page of your website or not having navigation link in your website then it is a doorway page.

Cloaking

Cloaking refers to the practice of delivering one page to a search engine for indexing while serving an entirely different page to the end user. Some examples of cloaking include:

Serving a page containing text to search engines, while showing a page of images or Flash to users as search engines don’t read images and flash files.

Cloaking is often confused with doorway pages and cloaking. The pages for robot are called doorway pages and this process of creating doorway pages is called cloaking

One of the big questions with cloaking is how to tell whether the arriving visitor is a search engine spider or a human. Identification is usually done either by checking the visitors’ IP address, or his User-agent string.

There are two ways of cloaking. One is IP delivery, where the IP addresses of spiders are recognized another is User-Agent delivery, where the spiders’ User-Agents are recognized.

From the beginning, a key motivation for designing Web crawlers has been to retrieve Web pages and add them or their representations to a local repository. Such a repository may then serve particular application needs such as those of a Web search engine. In its simplest form a crawler starts from a seed page and then uses the external links within it to attend to other pages.

Running a web crawler is a challenging task. There are tricky performance and reliability issues.
In order to scale to hundreds of millions of web pages, Google has a fast distributed crawling system. Each crawler keeps roughly 300 connections open at once. This is necessary to retrieve web pages at a fast enough pace. At peak speeds, the system can crawl over 100 web pages per second using four crawlers or we have been able to crawl up to tens of thousands of pages within a few minutes. This amounts to roughly 600K per second of data.

In order to fetch a Web page, we need an HTTP client which sends an HTTP request for a page and reads the response. The client needs to have timeouts to make sure that an unnecessary amount of time is not spent on slow servers or in reading large pages.

Once a page has been fetched, we need to parse its content to extract information that will feed and possibly guide the future path of the crawler. Parsing may imply simple hyperlink/URL extraction or it may involve the more complex process of tidying up the HTML content in order to analyze the HTML tag tree.

Black hat practices are unfair mainly because these techniques do not follow the rules and regulations of search engines. Black hat presents content unethically to search engine spiders and users. This in turn leads to a poor user experience.

What are the consequences for using Black Hat techniques?

Keep in mind the fact that there are no particular guidelines that define the term Black hat. So, what is considered black hat by one webmaster or search engine may be considered acceptable by another search engine or webmaster. There are different schools of thought on what is considered Black hat. The Property Rights Approach says that anything you do to your property, i.e., your website is not black hat. While the Visitor Value Approach endorses any form of promotion as long as it does not affect the user experience. The Unnatural Rankings Approach believes that if a site is ranked unnaturally high for its keywords, it’s back hat. But the consequences are almost the same no matter what the approach. Cloaking

Cloaking is a black hat SEO technique used to present different content to search engines and different to the users. Its a deceptive method used to cheat search engines in order to rank well for desired keywords.

Cloaking is done by showing content based on the request IP address or the User-Agent HTTP header of the user. A user identified as search engine is shown a specifically prepared and optimized website with only purpose to rank well for desired keywords. If a user is not a search engine they are presented with the “real” websites content.

Cloaking is also used to trick users to visit certain websites based on their description in search engines. For example a user searching for some product may click on a website in search engine based on its description and title but the final website will not be the one described in SERP’s. It will be a totally different one. In many cases its used to hide pornographic content of a website and drive traffic to it.

For this reason search engines consider cloaking as spam and that kind of behavior is against their guidelines. Google webmaster guidelines about cloaking:

Google’s aim is to give our users the most valuable and relevant search results. Therefore, we frown on practices that are designed to manipulate search engines and deceive users by directing them to sites other than the ones they selected, and that provide content solely for the benefit of search engines. Google may take action on doorway sites and other sites making use of these deceptive practice, including removing these sites from the Google index.

Cloaking methods:

• IP address cloaking
• User-Agent cloaking
• HTTP_REFERER header cloaking
• HTTP Accept-Language header cloaking
• JavaScript cloaking

IP address cloaking – a method based on determining IP addresses and delivering different results based on that. Search engines with certain IP addresses will be shown a one version of a web page and all other IP addresses will be shown another version.

User-Agent cloaking – delivering different versions of a website based on User-Agent. If a script determines that a search engine is trying to gain access to a website based on its User-Agent signature it will show it cloaked version of a website.

HTTP_REFERER header cloaking – if a user is coming from a certain website (for example from a Yahoo! web directory) they will be presented a cloaked version of a website based on the HTTP_REFERER header.

HTTP Accept-Language header cloaking – enables to show different versions of a website based on a users web browser language. It is used to present various language versions of a website without asking users for their language.

JavaScript cloaking – users with enabled JavaScrpt are shown one version while users with JavaScript turned off (like search engines) are shown another version of a website.

Any type of cloaking with deceptive intentions is bad and may result in banning from search engines, so be careful when using it.
